Game wont launch at all from steam. other games will

Hey, I recently bought "Defense Grid: The Awakening" from steam.
I've installed it, and it wont run. when I click launch the little steam window that says "launching.." opens up for 1 sec and closes without launching the game.

Other games like Rome: Total War or Altitude will run.

I already did the "verify game cache" thing, and it always says "1 file failed to verify.." and then updates the game.
it seems to be useless.

(my computer's hardware can handle the game, I believe thats not the problem. I have Sapphire HD4890 and Intel E5200)

What can I do?

Typically if the game closes without launching it's a hardware or driver compatibility issue.* Try making sure you have the latest DirectX, update audio drivers for any audio hardware (audio conflicts tend to cause more problems for us than other games as we use DirectX's*XAudio*for our audio engine.* A few other games do this too, but this is more rare than I'd like).

Installing DirectX 9.0c helped, the game is working.
but now the game's crashing when I hit "play" :(

Crashing when you hit "play" still means to me that it isn't finding the directx files it needs to run the game.* Perhaps your DirectX9c install did not fully install?
