View Full Version : Suggestion - Color related

First off, I realize my problem doesn't affect any significant portion of the gaming market, but oh well, i'll say it anyways. I have slight colorblindness. I can see in colors, and know which one is which and such like that. However, certain colors, I cannot differentiate. The color of level 1 and level 2 towers happen to be close enough to where I cannot tell the difference by the color, but I have to zoom in and look at the tower's graphic. My suggestion is to tweak the colored markings that show a tower's level such that they are visible to people like myself. A shift in brightness in one of the first 2 tower levels should suffice. While color-blinds can't see colors as well, we can often find differences in overall brightness that color-normals cannot =)

Hi,

First off, note that one of our key designers on the game also has some colorblindness and it is in fact one of the things we do spend a fair amount of time on in our games - knowing that our difference in colors can affect many people that way.* We did adjust the colors in the development process to compensate for this, but it sounds like we may not have done enough for you in this situation.* I'll pass your comments on to the art department, they are always looking for feedback on this type of subject for our work going forward.* I'm sorry our work on Defense Grid didn't hit our target with you.

Hmmm, what about little numbers over the towers? But what about enemy's? They change colors depending on difficulty.

I'm just glad to know that such suggestions are being heard and accounted for, as opposed to the average big development company, who would probably just say "lol what a loser, can't see colors" and disregard the comment entirely. As far as the color in enemies goes, it does take me a few seconds of staring at the top of the screen to tell how many units in the next wave are tier 1 or 2. Sometimes, if they're all tier 2 for example, I can't definitively tell what they are. Tier 3 units are wonderfully obvious =)

An ideal solution would be a "Colorblind Assist" checkbox in the game's options. Just the other day I played a game with such an option, changing all green pieces (or might have been yellow... couldn't tell the difference) to gray. But being in software development myself, I understand that ideal != reality, so just about any solution is greatly appreciated. And it is good to hear that colorblindness was already accounted for, and saddening at the same time that my eyes still aren't good enough to see it lol.

Great game, keep it up!

Very good thoughts, and thanks for the feedback.* It would be easy for us to think "oh, we took that into account so it is no longer a problem," and now we now that for many of you it still is, so I appreciate that a lot.*

We have a fairly long list and a small staff on the game right now, so I hesitate to make any promises, but I will make sure this is on our list and we'll see what we can do about it more than we've done.

Two easy texture-based fixes would be to have level two towers be blue instead of yellow, (then most colourblind people would be able to easily distinguish two of the upgrades from each other) and have the upgrade colours get progressively darker as you go through the upgrades- that is, a light green, a medium blue, and a dark red.
