I've spent too much time plaing this game. Here are some ideas for the sequel...

Set prior to The Awakening, covering the previous alien invasion
Main characters are the original AI (in human form) and his son Zeke. The player takes the role of Zeke's father.
Zeke should be a 'hero' character, moving about the map, with the player aiding him to complete objectives such as reactivating dormant towers and creating new tower door squares.
Since he would be too small and fragile by himself, he should be represented by a kind of tank/mecha that posesses gun, fire and missile attacks.
Later in the game, the player should be able to directly control Zeke.
There should be appropriate dialogue between Zeke and his Dad.
Aliens should be able to damage/destroy towers
Keeping Zeke alive would be part of the mission objectives
Some Aliens (eg Aerials) should remain on the map, harrassing the player until destroyed.
The ability to have movable towers would add depth. Towers should move very slowly, though.
The game would end with Zeke dying heroically in the penultimate mission. The final level would involve completing objectives in order to detonate an explosion big enough to destroy the aliens, but Zeke's father would also perish in the blast.
A dificult Steam achievement could involve actually saving Zeke.
