    Game Crashing at Launch

Whenever I launch Defense Grid: The Awakening, it starts up just like any other game. However, once the window is maximized, it just displays a white screen for a couple seconds before crashing. It crashes with no error as well. I have already updated my directX as well as my display drivers and tried running it several times afterwards with the same results. What else can I do to fix this because I really want to play the game...

Tyipcally - it's video drivers for those symptoms

Typically people with this problem have an older video card driver and need to update it.* You say you've updated both video drivers and the DirectX, so assuming that is the case, I'd also try updating your audio drivers as they could also be the cause of this.

If that doesn't fix the problem, please email the output of DxDiag.exe and msInfo32.exe (save-as in the the oldest nfo file format available please) to info @ hiddenpath .com and we'll take a look and see what we can suggest.

White screen crashes may also equal old audio drivers

Try updating the audio driver for your audio device as well, the recent set of emails I've been receiving seem to indicate that older audio drivers are leading to the crash with the newer DirectX audio system.

    concerning audio drivers

I can't seem to update my audio drivers. I've also asked a friend and he told me that I'm using a Realtek integrated sound card and that it can't be updated. Is that true?

    Is it true?

I expect that if you do have a Realtek audio chip that it does have a driver for Windows and it can be updated, so my impression is that no, that isn't true.

    updated but still no luck

I updated the realtek audio drivers and ran the game again. On previous driver updates, I had also re-installed and ran the game and the same thing happened then as it did just recently. After i install a new driver for whatever, it seems like the game launches to the white screen and then loads the HiddenPath green screen background for a couple seconds before crashing. Then it returns back to crashing instantly at white screen. I'll send a dxdiag file to you guys in a second after I try steam's advice about disabling all my background applications and programs with msconfig. Any idea about why it loads a bit of the HiddenPath background before crashing ? It seems like it showed the HiddenPath background slightly longer each time too... (3 times).

    How far it gets

When it crashes during the HPE loading screen it usually crashes because it thinks it can talk to the audio device, but it finds out it actually can't and there isn't a way for us to trap that and put up an error message since it's done at the driver*and DirectX level.* I'm not sure why sometimes it determines that the audio isn't there during the white portion of the screen and why sometimes it determines it isn't there during the green portion of the screen, but I wouldn't fixate on that being "different".* I think we need to get rid of the conflict or remove the offending driver / device.

    How should I proceed on

How should I proceed on finding the conflicting driver?

By the way, I have sent you an email from my account (has this forum screenname as the subject of the email) of a dxdiag report and msinfo32 report.

Also, under Device manager under the Sound, video, and game controllers category, it lists 3 items. There is the PSC604 PCI Audio Device, the Realtek AC'97 Audio, and the Unsupported Standard Game Port. I had updated the Realtek AC'97 Audio so that it's driver date lists to 3/10/2009. However, for the PCI Audio Device, it is still listed at 8/27/2002 and the Unsupported Standard Game Port's version is at 4/11/2006. Do the latter two matter?

Ok, sorry - to add on, I

Ok, sorry - to add on, I looked up the PSC604 PCI audio device and found that it was a phillips sound card..i guess..? I don't know why I have a Realtek chip and a phillips sound card...

Could you help me find a driver for it? - because I can't seem to find the Phillips site with their drivers.

Two audio devices with unsigned drivers

Hard to know exactly what is wrong here.* There are two audio cards, and DirectX is complaining about both drivers.* It's possible to get a driver for the right audio chip on your motherboard, but still get the wrong one because of changes the motherboard manufacturer makes, so make sure to try to get the realtek driver from the motherboard site.* The phillips audio card looks to have a driver on Philips' site, so try that, and we'll see what works.

    yay :]

Thanks for the help Jeff. I was curious to why I had two sound cards and then I remembered my dad put the Phillips one a few months back when my windows OS was messed up and causing my sound from the speakers to be distorted (we thought it was audio problems before I reformatted). Afterwards, the card just sat in the computer I guess. I removed it just an hour ago and tried opening the game and it works =] . I didn't want to bother updating the driver lol.

    Thanks again.
