Thread: Still no sound.

    Still no sound.

Okay, I just bought this game on impulse and was surprised to find out there was no sound. After extensive googling, it seems a lot of people had this problem but most of theirs had this fixed with a recent patch. Well I still have no sound, so what's going on?

running Vista Ultimate using onboard sound on the abit ip35 pro motherboard (realtek)

    Troubleshooting

Obviously we want you to have sound.* So, if you would, send the saved output file from dxdiag.exe and forward that to info @ hiddenpath .com and we'll take a look.*

The latest patch fixed the audio for most folks, but there may be more to investigate.*

We're using a relatively new DirectX audio engine, and it has great features and is the same capability as the Xbox version of the audio engine, but we're finding that it is fairly new and not yet commonly used in PC games.* Microsoft has been a good partner in trying to figure out the compatibility issues for the audio engine and we'll keep at it until they all seem to be quelched.

    Thanks,

    Jeff

    no sound in retail version

I fixed this by, as suggested, uninstalling the sound driver for my modem. Yes, WinXP would then reinstall it at next start. But what worked out was - in order - #1 uninstall the modem's sound driver and then #2 disable the modem.

    Vista, Win7 & DirectX

It turns out that the latest DirectX audio engine that we use requires you to use the "speakers" output in your Vista*or Win7 control panel rather than the "default" output.

If you have Vista or Win7*and you do not have sound, see if this doesn't address your issue.* More details below from Twig:

    Jeff

If you are still having audio problems on Windows 7 or Windows Vista, please follow the following steps and see if it fixes the issue:

    1. Go to Start > Control Panel.

    2. Double-click on the Sound icon.

    3. Single-click the Speakers to highlight them.

    4. Click on Properties near the bottom right corner.

    5. Go to the Enhancements tab and click on it. If you don't have an Enhacements tab, you may have a tab called "SoundBlaster".

    6. Make sure "Disable all sound effects" is checked. Or if you have a "SoundBlaster" tab, make sure the checkbox labeled "Disable enhancements" is checked.

    7. Click OK

    8. Play Defense Grid!

I'd very much appreciate users that are having audio problems reply to this thread saying if the above steps did or did not fix their problem.

I would also like to thank the users that worked with me through email to help come up with this solution. Hopefully this solution will work for anyone else still having problems!

    Re: Still no sound.

Hi Jeff, I'm also having sound issues on my iMac. Every so often, the speakers make a sound as if you plug a cable into your stereo, with the speakers still on. After that, there is no more sound in the game. When I leave the game and go back to the main menue, the sound is back. If I then start another game, it works fine for a while, but then the sound goes away again...

Is there a patch for Defense Grid that I may apply?

Don't know what version of the game I'm running, but I'm hoping that you might help me with this problem.

    Have a great day.

    Greetings,

    Claus

Unfortunately I wouldn't know how to begin to help you on the Mac version.* Go ahead and contact VPL for technical support.* Tell them the details of the Mac you're playing the game on and perhaps they can help you more.

    Hi,

Jeff, the disable enhancements fix worked for me, and is still working.

    Thanks

    Odd fix.

Oddly enough, I had to switch my default from "Speakers" to "Digital Audio Interface" to get my sound to work.
