to reinstall the game on Steam

You can delete everything in the C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\defensegridtheawakeni ng directory.

Steam should then automatically re-install the game the next time you*launch the game from the Steam app or the shortcut.*

By default your save games are in a different location:

    C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\userdata\<yoursteamid>\18500

If you*backup everything in the 18500 directory and below elsewhere, you*can then feel confident that you aren't losing any progress.

Game data files are corrupt. Please reinstall.

    Update:
I followed Jeff's advice above, but it did not work.
I then stopped Stream and uninstalled DG in windows (using add/remove program)
Started Steam and Dbl clicked DG.
Steam redownloaded DG and I was happily wasting my time playing silly video games.

I installed DG from within Steam without problems
I ran it successfully for hundreds of hours over several weeks.
Suddenly I get the "Game data files are corrupt. Please reinstall." error message.
It appears just after the Hiddenpath bitmap is displayed, so I think I am leaving Steam OK
I can still run the DG Demo outside of Steam
I can still run Empire Total War Demo within Steam

So I guess I should reinstall the game but how?
How do I get the install file since I installed it via Steam?

    Error 51

I encountered an error 51 when attempting to launch the game from within Steam so I "verified the integrity" of the game cache, it updated itself and fixed itself.

On a side note: My boyfriend changed his resolution in-game and it changed the resolution on his computer and Windows would not allow him to change it back unless he rebooted....

    Thanks for the info

The "Error 51" is a Steam error and it sounds like your steam cache was indeed corrupt.* You reset it and that fixed that problem.*

With respect to the resolution changing in the game and then not being able to change in Windows, the best guess I could offer on that would be to try updating the video drivers.* I would expect a "crash-on-exit" type of thing would need to happening to cause that and likely that would be tied to old video drivers.

    I'm having the same problem

I'm having the same problem here. Bought the game on steam (figured why not for $5) and now it keeps telling me that it is corrupted and to reinstall. Have uninstalled every way imaginable, through steam and windows, making sure to delete the folder in the steamapps directory and have tried changing the languages back and forth and I keep getting the same error. At this point I am beginning to think that I am just out $5 unless I can get some kind of prepackaged binary or something separate from steam. Any other tips on resolving this would be great, thanks.

Repeated corruption typically means not meeting min sys req

I'm not sure why this is the case, but so far, for the people who continually get the "corrupted game files" over and over and it doesn't go away with a reinstall, that scenario typically means they should be getting a different error message saying that your computer does not meet the minimum system requirements for the game.* Can you detail what your computer setup is and how it compares to the minimum required?

    Thanks,

    Jeff

    System Specs

Sure thing, I have an athlon 64 dual core 5200 with 2 gigs of ram running windows xp and an nvidia 9500 gt. The only thing I can think of that is non standard is I have steam and all my steam games running off of my ext3 partition that's mounted as ext2, but haven't had any problems before. Thanks for the quick response!

    Well, that sounds pretty good

Well, that sounds pretty good for min sys req, so that doesn't seem to be it.* I'll ask the team for further ideas as the only thing I can think of is to reinstall Steam and then reinstall Defense Grid and I'm not convinced that would help.* The external drive could be something, but that would seem odd.* Are you running Vista and not an administrator?* I'm wondering if there could be a permissions issue...

Oh, and this shouldn't matter either, but have you run the AMD clock fix for multicore processors as well?

    Got it to work

Sorry for the long response. I uninstalled steam and then installed it on my ntfs drive (I didnt mean external when I said ext3 and ext2, they are file systems =P) and it worked! Not sure though if the issue was if steam needed to be reinstalled or if there was a problem with trying to run it off a ext filesystem, either way its on my ntfs drive (it IS smaller but oh well) and working now!

    Glad to hear it worked

I'm glad to hear it worked.* Most likely was a corrupt Steam install.

    Corrupt game files... argh

This happened to me so I searched google and found this thread... not anything too useful here, no "official" answer of what to do.

I will try deleting all local content and reinstalling.

Worked after delete local and reinstall

Annoying but worked and my save files are still intact. Not sure how the heck the files became corrupt.
