More communication with Microsoft this week, but no fix as of yet. I wish it was moving to solution faster as well. So far we're talking with the right people, but not making the progress we'd like. We'll keep at it.
Thanks for the update, seems to have taken a poke to get it though or am I being unfair? Oh no, I hope I'm not becoming all bitter and twisted.
I started it up tonight, had to download another update, and I was able to play through three levels without any locking up or crashing. I did get the "unable to unlock achievement" message during one level (probably one of the ones I already have -- I have all of the non-You Monster achievements unlocked already). The last level I played, I finally got a gold medal, and Savant Genius unlocked.
The unable to unlock achievement message is an annoying interruption, but at least it can be dismissed relatively quickly.
game freezes, achievement error msg mid-game.
I've had the game well over a year, you monster a month or two. I never had a problem until a week ago with the error message about achievements not being awarded at the end of a game. Now I am getting achievement error msg very early DURING the game and/or the game is now freezing completely. Some of this seems to be connected to the right button for speeding up action. So why am I only experiencing trouble NOW after all this time of being error free?
Achievement and Freezing Issues
I have received the achievement error for over a year...
1) Deleted my profile, the game, and its DLC.
2) re-downloaded all the above.
3) Still received the error and the game was constantly freezing.
4) Deleted everything again
5) Re-downloaded the Core game only
6) Still receiving the achievement error but the freezing stopped
7) Downloaded just Map #4 DLC (Missing only the Overflowing achievement in first 4 map packs.
8) I still get the achievement error but the freezing has stopped.
I rinse and repeated this on three different Xboxes tonight.
I can re-produced this at will. There is no reason this should not be troubleshoot-able. I no of no other games with this issue. If Hidden Path wants I can provide written permission to work with Microsoft and access my gamertag (NeoRatt) to get my gamertag data and troubleshoot this.
I also downloaded You Monster. And although I get the achievement error, the achievements are popping...

I've been waiting months for this issue to be resolved. And now the game is worse than before. It used to pop the achievement error then allow me to continue to play. Now, the game just freezes (locks up my xbox). I have to turn the xbox off in order to reset. Any idea how much longer before it is fixed? At this point, I'm not sure I would ever want to purchase another game from Hidden Path.
As you can see from all the writing on this subject, we're helpless to fix it because the part that is broken isn't in the game code we deliever to Microsoft, it's in the back-end achievement and authentication system and is further complicated by the dash update. I'm not sure why our game is more affected by the update than others, but Microsoft hasn't given us any further info and don't seem interested in fixing this problem. The one thing we can do is give you a copy of the game on a platform that works fine and our game has none of these issues on Steam. Send an email to info <at> hiddenpath <dot> com and we'll send you a free Steam key for the game. We are equally frustrated with this situation as you are.
Only one achievement gives me issues
Beating a dead potato gives me issues. It says achievement error that I am not logged in xbox live or my storage is not correct. However, I am able to get the other achievements fine. I have all the achievements except that one and the best friends forever one. However, I am sure I can get the best friends forever one okay. It is just the beating a dead potato gives me issues. It is the one where you are supposed to get it after beating any level in the you monster expansion.

We'd ask for the drive and repay you for it if we thought it would give us the info we need to solve the problem. Microsoft even has some internal employees who have had this problem and have offered their hard drives to the internal folks at LIVE who can look into this, and they haven't been able to make progress that way.
The LIVE folks keep telling us that it has to do with people having something wrong with their profile, but even when people fully restore their profile it doesn't fix it sadly. When the LIVE folks learned that, they stopped talking with us and our folks at Microsoft Game studios about it.
We suspected it had something to do with the back-end achievement system and also the symptoms change each time the dash is updated since December, and they say that both of those connections are "unlikely", but they don't elaborate further.
Our last attempt was to ask them to help us watch the LIVE traffic with a user who had the problem so we could better see what the game is asking for, and see what the back-end system is responding with. We expected we could then see what is going on from that (it could show something wrong with the game that only affects certain users, or something wrong with the back-end response for certain users). The response we got was "we're not sure there is a way to do that" - which we suspect means they don't want to go to that trouble sadly.
Anyway, thanks again for the hard drive offer. If we knew how we could use that and how we could take steps to solve the problem with the drive we would definitely take you up on it, but I think the obstacles we face are on the network side (at least so we could understand what is happening), as the issues don't happen in the test environment they have set up for game developers.
I don't know how much you guys know about the new dashboard's "secret" features... but it drains a heck of a lot more net than all the previous dashboards combined... it's got a few data collection bots running at all times even when idle, it's running about 3 to 4 different videos regardless as to what "panel" you're on... the Avatars of your friend's list are constantly draining memory and net even when idle. I'm not sure how much of this effects things while in-game. but I took took the program apart with my son and his computer club/robotics team and the new dashboard is little more than evil. I'm sure the data collection bugs are still running, 1 of them is actually officially available to turn off via the profile options menu... but since mine were off, I doubt the "kinect data collection" being on had anything to do with it.
is there some way you could pull the entire game... re-work the coding from a base level, then re-release it? say as a "platinum edition" with all the DLC attached? I'd buy it again... or even just take option two? call it a special edition or something... that is exactly what Pinball FX did... they pulled the game and made a 2... even though 1 was still available via the demo... from what I heard, they had a similar bug that messed up the DLC tables... I forget which ones, I know it wasn't all of them.
I know it seems like a lot of work, or something.. I am just trying to help, even if it sounds like I'm being an ass... I always feel like I am...

Interesting insight & suggestion. Thanks! Because the main part of the team right now is focusing on shipping Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, something like what you're talking about would need to be done after that. What we've been doing of course is giving affected Xbox 360 users free Steam keys for the game where we have more control of the overall game experience. In talking with several indie devs, many are having issues with Xbox as well - though often different issues. I'm not sure you're going to see as many games coming to the Xbox 360 download channel as we used to. Many are migrating to Steam as their primary channel for release.
I think you guys are doing a great job (yourself especially) handling this issue that's not even in your control... I feel the pain there... and it's sad that Microsoft isn't taking this stuff to heart... the new dashboard was implemented to replicate the "Windows Live Phone" design. which in my opinion is absurd... which is the reason we wanted to reverse it... but after trying many ways, there's no way to run current games on a non-updated dashboard... tried all the previous versions thanks to image saves on my computer thanks to FATX... but too much is tied to the Gamertag and not the dashboard itself, it notices you're running an old dash and forces an update or won't connect... or won't play some games... it's really interesting actually.

I got Defense Grid about a year ago and I liked it so much I couldn't stop playing it. I even got my dad to buy it on his xbox and play and he likes it too. Sadly, now I don't want to play it anymore. Even before the update and You Moster dlc I got some error message after completing a level that said something about not being able to upload my score to the leaderboards. I just ignored it because my score was still uploaded. I haven't played it after the new update and dlc came out other than just to have a look at what was new in the update. Yesterday tho, I decided that I wanted to play it again. I went to launch the game, it gave me another update and after installing it, it told me the game files are corrupt and that I should reinstall. I started it again and it worked. I didn't end up playing tho because I decided I wanted the new dlc. I went back to the dashboard and downloaded it. It took me until today to actually try it and now it wouldn't even start. I launched the game and it froze on the "Xbox Live Arcade" screen. Tried it again, same thing. Deleted and downloaded everything again, same thing (I have all the dlc). Deleted the You Moster dlc and launched it, the game started perfectly. To be able to play the new dlc I have to delete it each time before I launch the game, start the game, download it from the main menu in the game and then I can play it. Doing all that takes about 15 minutes and I don't have a lot of patience. I also got the $cam once but it disappeared after I waited a bit like it tells you to do here on the forums. I haven't experienced any other problems, yet.
I wish we had the ability to fix what is happening to you. Much of what you describe is outside of the game and not something we have any ability to affect here at Hidden Path. There appears to be something wrong with user authentication by the LIVE system for your account and our game, and we have let Microsoft know about this as I'm sure you have also read on the forums. Fortunately this does not happen to every Xbox LIVE user, but to those users that do experience it, the game becomes unplayable. I greatly appreciate your description of your issue and wish very much that there was something we could do to resolve the issue directly on the Xbox 360 for you and the others affected.
In the meantime, we can offer you the same game and DLC on the PC by giving you a Steam code. On Steam we see none of these problems with the game. If you have a PC you can play games on, we are sure you will have a better experience with the game on that platform because of the issues affecting your Defense Grid account on Xbox LIVE.
